This Health and Safety policy sets out how Crystal Palace Man and Van manages risks and protects the health, safety and welfare of our employees, contractors, customers and members of the public. As a professional removals and man and van service, we are committed to carrying out all work in a safe and responsible manner, complying with relevant health and safety legislation and recognised industry standards.

Our Health and Safety Commitment

Crystal Palace Man and Van will take all reasonably practicable steps to prevent accidents, injuries and work-related ill health. We recognise that removal work involves manual handling, driving, loading and unloading, and working in a variety of homes, offices and premises. We therefore actively plan, control and monitor our activities to minimise risks to people, property and the environment.

Health and safety performance is regarded as a core part of our business. Management and staff at all levels share responsibility for maintaining safe working conditions, safe systems of work and a positive safety culture.

Roles and Responsibilities

Management is responsible for implementing this policy, ensuring that adequate resources, training and supervision are provided. Managers will organise risk assessments, review procedures, respond to concerns and ensure that incidents are investigated to prevent recurrence.

Employees and contractors must take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. They are expected to follow safe working procedures, use equipment correctly, report hazards, near misses and incidents promptly, and cooperate fully with any investigation or remedial action.

Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work

Risk assessments are carried out for the typical activities of our man and van and removal services, including packing, lifting and carrying, loading and unloading vehicles, driving and operating equipment. For unusual or higher risk tasks, specific assessments are undertaken before work begins.

Control measures, safe systems of work and method statements are developed from these assessments and communicated to relevant staff. Where necessary, job-specific briefings are held on site to ensure that all team members understand the risks and required precautions.

Manual Handling and Lifting

Manual handling is a key part of removal work. Crystal Palace Man and Van places strong emphasis on correct lifting techniques and safe handling practices. Staff receive training on assessing loads, using team lifts, avoiding awkward postures and recognising when mechanical aids or additional assistance are required.

Where practicable, handling aids such as sack trucks, furniture dollies and straps are used to reduce strain and risk of injury. Staff are instructed not to lift loads that are too heavy or unsafe for them, and to seek support when needed.

Use of Equipment and Vehicles

All vehicles and equipment used in our removal services are maintained in a safe, roadworthy and reliable condition. Regular checks are carried out on vehicles, ramps, straps, blankets and other tools to ensure they are suitable for use and free from obvious defects.

Only trained and authorised personnel are permitted to drive company vehicles or use specialist equipment. Drivers must follow road safety laws, drive responsibly, allow adequate time for journeys and take breaks as required to avoid fatigue.

Safe Loading, Unloading and Working at Premises

Our teams plan loading and unloading operations carefully to prevent injuries, damage to items and harm to customers or bystanders. Access routes are inspected where reasonably possible, and trip hazards or obstructions are identified and controlled.

Care is taken when working in stairwells, narrow hallways and shared areas to protect both our staff and members of the public. Where necessary, areas are temporarily cordoned off or clearly indicated, and safe lifting routes are agreed before moving large or heavy items.

Customer and Public Safety

Crystal Palace Man and Van is committed to carrying out all work with minimal risk to customers, neighbours and the public. Our teams take care to maintain clear walkways, manage doors and gates safely, and avoid leaving tools or equipment in positions where they could cause trips or injuries.

Customers are advised to keep children and pets away from loading areas and vehicle access points while work is in progress. Any concerns raised by customers about safety during a job are taken seriously and addressed immediately.

Training, Information and Supervision

We provide appropriate health and safety training to all employees, including induction training for new starters and refresher training where required. This includes manual handling, vehicle safety, use of equipment and awareness of typical hazards found during removal work.

Supervisors and team leaders are responsible for ensuring that safety procedures are followed on site, that less experienced staff are properly supported, and that any unsafe behaviour is corrected promptly.

Accident Reporting and Emergency Procedures

All accidents, incidents and near misses that occur during our work must be reported to management as soon as possible. Details are recorded, investigated where appropriate, and used to improve our procedures and prevent recurrence.

Staff are made aware of emergency procedures, including how to respond in the event of fire, injury or other serious incident while on a job or on the road. First aid supplies are available in vehicles or with team leaders where required.

Health, Welfare and Wellbeing

Workloads and schedules are planned to reduce excessive fatigue, particularly for driving and intensive manual handling tasks.
